Creative / Intermediate Image Editing (Special Interest Group)

Contact: Gary Ford
Sign up for this SIG

Photo Editing
"when you alter an image file in any way after it has come from your camera that either represents what you actually saw in the scene being photographed, or to achieve a final image that represents your own artistic intentions."
In this special interest group, hosted by Gary Ford, members come together to share and build their image editing skills.

The meeting is open to photographers of all skill levels. It runs the last Wednesday of the month, September through May. The host will challenge those with intermediate and advanced photo editing skills to enhance their own knowledge and share what they know with others. Members with basic skills can watch if they like or attend the Basic Image Editing SIG instead.

Why Edit Your Photos?
You will achieve a final image that either represents what you actually saw in the scene being photographed, or to achieve a final image that represents your own artistic intentions. Your edits can range from simply adding contrast to a flat RAW file, cropping, removing noise, adding sharpness, or changing file size for printing; to removing unwanted elements of an image, adding special effects, or creating a composite of multiple images to get a desired effect. See the example edits on the right.

Meeting Format
Meeting are conducted digitally via
Zoom. To participate you will need a computer with a microphone and camera, or a smart tablet. You must pre-register to receive the link to the Zoom meetings.
What to expect
Each meeting will have four components:

Sample Image Assessment – we will look at a small sample of images and discuss what could be done to improve them.

Member Stand-Off Exercises – before each meeting, up to three members will be invited to complete an edit of an image they receive 15 minutes prior to the meeting. They will take a turn in which they have 10 minutes to edit the image however they wish, while telling the group what they are doing.

Before/After Image Editing Exercise - you will be invited to submit one Before/After image set where you show the image as it came from your camera and then your edited version(s) of that image. We will view and discuss the images.

My Picture Your Edit Challenge Exercise - each month you will be
challenged to try something new by working on two RAW images supplied by the host and we will look at and discuss your results. You can edit with whatever software you choose and however you wish to edit the images.

Note: Participation in each of the components of the meetings is  voluntary.
meeting times
We meet the last Wednesday of the month at 7 PM, for approximately 75-90 minutes. * There are additional meetings June through August for group members who wish to meet.
