Still Life (Special Interest Group)

In this NEW special interest group, co-hosted by Bob Royer and Allan Reich, members come together to explore Still Life photography principles and practices. This monthly evening meeting is open to photographers of all skill levels. It runs on the third Thursday of the month, September through May.

Why Still Life Photography?
You’re probably familiar with still life in art - those paintings that
depict a bowl of fruit or flowers in a vase. Usually, the subjects are commonplace objects. That can include both manmade objects (such as vases, items of clothing, and consumer products) and natural objects (like plants, food, rocks, and shells). The major advantage offered by still life is the freedom to arrange the objects any way you want.

A lot of emphasis is put on the arrangement of the items, the lighting, and the framing. That makes it a great genre to experiment with and it can help you become a better photographer.

Meeting Format
Sep, Nov, Jan, Mar, May monthly meetings are conducted online via
Zoom. To participate you will need a computer with a microphone and camera, or a smart tablet. You must pre-register to receive the link to the Zoom meetings.

Oct, Dec, Feb, Apr monthly meetings are conducted in person on a Saturday or Sunday. We will practice still life photography. A camera, flash and tripod would be useful. Location, dates and times to be decided by participants.
what to expect
 The formal online activities include:
  • Short presentations. These can deal with practical and/or theoretical concerns, review excellent photographers and artists, provide tips on image processing, presentation, or handling.
  • Showcases. These allow a member to present a project, images relating to a particular place or subject, multiple treatments of a single image, etc.
  • Comment and critique. These sessions allow all members to submit images on the monthly theme. These are shown to the group, and both the creator and the attendees can offer constructive comments and ask questions. We expect each member will be able to submit one or two images for each online meeting.
meeting Dates
Meetings are held online third Thursday of alternative months (Sep, Nov, Jan, Mar, May) from 7:00-8:30 PM. In person meetings are held every second month on a weekend, with the location, date and time TBD.
