Past, Present and Future
Written by Barbara Morban, IACC Webmaster
On Thursday, November 10, 2016, Nora Hartfelder, IACC member, shared some insights into her world of photography.
Although Nora took photos in her youth, it was not until about a year and a half ago (Spring 2015) that she was able to truly focus on photography. Her first love was architecture, so off she went to New York City to take photos of buildings, such as the Empire State Building, the Whitney Museum and Madison Square Gardens. The buildings were magnificent, but, for Nora, it was the people who captured her imagination and made her reflect on what life was like at that particular moment.
As Nora shared some specific images, she mentioned that the challenge she faced, and still faces, was how to tell the story with a photograph. For example, the woman holding the ice cream (top left) may just be trying to stay cool, but she is holding an ice cream cone that is worth a full day's Government wage in Cuba, an enormous amount for her to pay. The photograph of the woman in the Cuban taxi cab (top right) is also intriguing, since her expression is one of total disinterest (the question of course is why). To Nora, 'photos don't only tell their own story they also remind of us of things we have experienced.' The photograph (second row left) of the couple walking with the Bank of America building in the background, reminded Nora of the hour she spent in a New York Café with an old Artist couple talking about their life in the city.
Club members were treated to a slideshow of Nora's marvelous photos taken in New York City, Cuba, Montreal and the local area. Nora is a very impressive, energetic and talented photographer, who captured moments in time and memories that peaked our interest. Nora's eye for street photography is amazing and there wasn't one image that didn't evoke an emotional response from Club members.
Thank you to Nora for sharing her past and present images. We are so looking forward to her future ...
