Newcomers (Special Interest Group)

In this NEW special interest group, new club members come together to build their photographic skills and to connect with others. The meeting is open to new members who wish to explore the club's many opportunities. It runs the first Monday of the month, October through May.

Why Newcomers?
Every year our club has newcomers with a wide variety of photographic skill taking part in its many programs. It is easy to get overwhelmed, so
the Newcomers SIG focuses on opportunities to get to know each other through outings, discussions of key club activities including preparation for competitions, who to contact when you have questions or when you have input that you would like share, how to get more involved with the board or how to contribute to the three pillars of the club: learning, having fun and community service among other things.

Meeting Format
Meeting are conducted digitally via Zoom. To participate you will need a computer with a microphone and camera, or a smart tablet. You must pre-register to receive the link to the Zoom meetings.

What to expect

Meetings have three segments:

A presentation by the Special Interest Group host on one aspect of photography. The topics we cover through the course of the year will depend on the interests and abilities of the SIG members.
A constructive viewing and discussion of member images with a focus on what each photographer wanted to achieve with the photos, any concerns they might have about the outcome, and positive comments about each image by group members.

The formal activities include:

Short presentation. These can deal with practical and/or theoretical concerns, review excellen photographers and artists, provide tips on image processing, presentation, or handling.
Showcases. These allow a member to present a project, images relating to a particular place or subject, multiple treatments of a single image, etc.
Comment and critique. These sessions allow all members to submit images on the monthly theme. These are shown to the group, and both the creator and the attendees can offer constructive comments and ask questions. We expect each member will be able to submit one or two images for each meeting.

We meet the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m., for approximately 75-90 minutes.
