Activities: Jan 2021

Tuesday, Jan 12, 2021 - Member Showcase: “Five and Dime”

Recording of presentation: click here (members only)

A set of volunteer members will submit either five or ten images they have shot at some time in their photographic career. Each volunteer will briefly share their story behind each of the images or the set of images.

The volunteers will tell the story that explains why they chose these images from amongst all that they have shot – favourite images, troublesome images, images representative of something significant to the photographer, images that involved a culmination of a clear plan, images that reveal a stage in the photographer’s learning, or whatever matters to the photographer.

The stories will be shared as the images are shown from the host’s screen. If a volunteer has elected to submit five images, he or she will have up to ten minutes to tell their story or stories, but can speak for much less if they wish. If a volunteer has elected to share ten images, he or she will have a maximum of 20 minutes to share the stories for these images, and the freedom to speak for less.

The intention for the evening is to share about 60 images and the stories that relate.

Christopher Dodds is a full-time freelance nature and wildlife photographer, nature photography workshop, safari leader/instructor, photography educator, blogger, and lecturer. Chris has combined his life-long passion for nature with highly technical expertise to become one of the top nature photographers of the time.

Chris’ photography and workshop safari business has built a loyal client base that follows him from Alaska, to Newfoundland, Florida to Africa, to capture stunning photographs under Chris’ sharp tutelage. His widely-read blog has become the “go to” resource for many nature photographers from around the world. Chris's images appear in many of the world's leading magazines and newspapers and among countless private collections.
I’ve always had a deep love and interest in nature and photography, so it was only natural that I followed my passion as a nature photographer. I try to capture an unobtrusive, close and intimate view into my subject’s lives; at their level and without disturbance. I spend an enormous amount of time learning every detail about my subjects, their behaviour and their lives. As a visual storyteller, there is nothing more rewarding than recording a unique behaviour or moment, and doing so without my presence felt by my subject, or the viewer. As an educator and workshop/safari leader, I love sharing what I've learned and it truly is wonderful to see a participant improve their skills and learn how to reliably create awesome images filled with visual impact.

Tuesday, Jan 19, 2021 - Workshop: The Call to Creativity (Freeman Patterson)

"A Call to Creativity", a presentation about the nature of creativity which, Freeman Patterson believes, applies to all forms of art.

About this Event
To quote Freeman Patterson, about his art, "Every artist is, first of all, a craftperson thoroughly knowledgeable about the materials, tools, and techniques of his or her particular medium and skilled in using many of them. However, in my view, no amount of technical knowledge and competence is, of itself, sufficient to make a craftsperson into an artist. That requires caring --- passionate caring about ultimate things."

This 1 1/2 hr. long presentation is comprised of an opening talk followed by images and a commentary and is designed for photographers, painters, and to teachers of every sort.
Freeman begins this presentation with a talk about the nature of creativity and ways to nurture and develop the creativity with which we all are born. He includes stories of people who have used their creativity under great difficulty to benefit others and follows this with a series of photographs (with commentary) that illustrate his main points and reveal how both the symbols in our dreams and the symbols in our art tell our life story.

Freeman has presented this program many times and in several countries – Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Israel, France, England, Canada, and the United States – and regularly updates both the spoken and visual content. It is continually a work in progress.

We are invited to this workshop as guests of the Harbour City Photography Club.
