By Roxy Hastings, IACC Member
After an initial photo shoot arranged by Steve Ricketts in October 2015, IACC member Roxy Hastings has continued to photograph for the Edmonton and Area Land Trust (EALT). EALT is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving local natural areas to benefit people, wildlife, and the environment. Its volunteers help monitor these areas, complete stewardship tasks, and document and capture the state of the land. Roxy’s background as a professional botanist is especially valued by EALT as the photos are often accompanied by species names and annotations of the photos biological significance.
On February 3, 2016, Roxy accompanied EALT Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Weizenbach and seven other volunteers on a winter survey of Boisvert’s GreenWoods, 80 acres of pristine old growth poplar forest just north of Morinville. The group recorded wildlife tracks, spotted a Great Horned Owl and hung three new nest boxes to provide homes to local songbirds. The pictures seen here were taken at that event; Roxy’s third shoot for EALT. No pictures of the Great Horned Owl, as Roxy was too busy shooting lichens!
For a photographer it’s a great opportunity to have access to biologically rich landscapes close to the city in a sea of private land where gaining access and permission to shoot can be problematic and where much of the landscape has been converted to farmland. EALT gains by having access to photographs that they can use to promote their conservation initiatives. Consider volunteering to shoot a site or an event for EALT.
