Saturday, Apr 9, 2022 - Workshop: Still Life Photography: Texture & Reflections (Adrien Veczan)

This is a unique opportunity to spend a day with Adrien to learn how he approaches lighting for still life situations. It will be conducted in Sue’s Garage, which is the perfect setting for still life objects.  The doors will open at 9:30 for those wishing to have an early tour of the unique exhibits on display.

Adrien Veczan is an artist and advertising photographer.

His career started in photojournalism with an internship at the Sydney Morning Herald in Australia, after which he joined the Toronto Star and later the Canadian Press. Adrien has also worked for Reuters, the Globe and Mail, USA Today. His photos have been published in the Guardian, the Washington Post and the New York Times. His job has given him access to countless icons including Robert De Niro, LeBron James and Queen Elizabeth II.

Adrien's elegant, thoughtful advertising photography has reached millions of eyes on billboards and magazines ranging from Wired to Playboy and from People to The Economist. Advertising agencies such as DDB, Cossette and ZGM hire Adrien to work on campaigns based on his art. His first fine art project Telephone took him to four continents and revealed the evolution of the device in a groundbreaking way. In 2017, his first solo exhibition in Alberta, Whyte Avenue, showcased the historic and eclectic Edmonton neighbourhood where he built Veczan Studio the following year. His most recent project Intermission is currently on display at the Saddlery Gallery in Edmonton. It explores the relationship between painting and photography through compositions by American painter Edward Hopper.

Looking beyond conventional landscape photography, this presentation looks at ways to set yourself apart from the crowd. From using different focal lengths and gear to help create unique images to looking beyond the grand vistas to the smaller intimate scenes, this discussion will help you view landscape photography techniques from a new perspective.

Mark Jinks is a nature photographer, writer, and educator based in Edmonton, Alberta. His main photography focus is on capturing beautiful landscapes and wildlife, the energy of severe weather, and the mystique of the night sky. He has been featured in numerous publications in both print and online and won awards and recognition for his work. Mark uses his photography to promote eco-tourism and conservation efforts and guides fellow nature photography lovers on workshops and tours across Western Canada.

Thursday, Apr 21, 2022 - Workshop: Stock Photos (Rick Carlson)

A Q & A session with Rick Carlson of Design Pics

Have you ever thought about selling your images on a stock photo site, but were too overwhelmed with how it works?  Have you ever thought about having your legacy images living on forever and providing an income for your heirs?  Well here is your chance for you to have an  information session with Rick Carlson.  He is the owner of Design Pics Inc., Printscapes, Disability Images, AG Stock, to name a few.  Through an agency like Designpics you can license your images rights, or arrange for print sales.  Rick is based right here in Edmonton, but deals internationally.  The session will start with Rick giving a brief overview, followed by an informal Q&A with him.  This will provide you with the opportunity to ask your questions and learn about this interesting topic.

Monday, Apr 25, 2022 - Workshop: Photographing a Slice of Urban Life (Rick Hulbert)

If you are at all shy about photographing strangers in candid situations, this presentation is designed to make you more comfortable. Rick Hulbert will touch on the photographer’s mindset, potential gear, camera settings, lens focal lengths, storytelling, capitalizing on happenstance, and the concept of “anticipating” the decisive moment.

His presentation is designed to be enjoyed by all photographers, regardless of your level of experience and expertise.

This presentation/workshop will be done in conjunction with the Street SIG at their regular meeting on this date. Members of this SIG are invited to submit some Street images of which Rick will select a few to review at the end of this workshop.

Rick Hulbert is an instructor of photography at Simon Fraser University and Langara College in Vancouver, and, in normal times, leads multi-day photo-workshops throughout Europe and North America. Rick‘s background as an international award winning Architect and Urban Designer informs his photography. His teachings reflect his knowledge of both the History of the 2-Dimensional Arts of Drawing and Painting along with the Science of Human Vision.

Rick is a "Life Member" of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and a “Fellow" of The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Rick was one of only two photographers from North America selected to attend and exhibit at the World Art Games in Bratislava, Slovakia.
