Tuesday, Apr 6, 2021 - "Member Showcase: "My Collective Obsession"
If you collect something and take pictures of your collection, this is your opportunity to share the story of what you collect and why. I heard about a member of the North Shore Photographic Society who mesmerized their membership with a story about her collection of brass fire hose nozzles. Perhaps you collect crystal, old cameras, feathers, scarves, shoes, knives, stamps, model trains or airplanes, cars, pictures of a certain something (a member of the Victoria Camera Club collected over 400 images of rural mailboxes for example), or anything I don’t know enough to even think about; then this is your opportunity to share your “obsession” and passion with other members of the club.

In Dennis’ words, “We are fortunate as photographers to be able to stop time. We are then able, as are the people in the photo, to go back in time and relive that special time if only for a brief moment. In the case of landscapes when viewed, we can instantly be transported to that location or imagine we are there. Great images evoke the senses, human emotion and tell a story.”
Dennis is a born and raised Edmontonian whose interest in photography goes back to 1981 when he bought his first manual camera. He took photos for almost a year and then marriage, career, and kids sidelined his hobby. It wasn't until 2017 that he rediscovered his passion. At the time, he was retired, the kids had gone, and his marriage was on the rocks. In late 2017, he walked into a pawn shop, saw a Canon D60 and bought it. He took a few shots but wasn't impressed in the slightest. Photography was supposed to be like watching golf on TV, easy right? He felt his pictures couldn't have been worse. He consequently took a bunch of courses at the Burwell School of Photography, starting with Studio Lighting in October 2018. The rest is history and he’s happy to say his skills continue to improve. It is his belief that photography is like golf, “it's a lifelong Pursuit of Excellence”. |

I became interested in photography as a teenager photographing disappearing steam locomotives from around the world. My creative style of photography gradually evolved as did my interest in entering photographic salons. Rather than just collecting letters after my name these qualifications stimulate/develop my work and have always given me goals to work for. I have been involved with the main photographic organisations in the UK sitting on panels and running advisory days. I enjoy helping others develop their own photographic skills. I have judged many National and International salons in the UK and have judged online international salons for the Photographic Society of America (PSA), and for for clubs in Australia, Norway and Turkey. Due to the Covid restrictions I spent hundreds of hours producing two new Zoom talks. My aim is to show these talks in as many countries as possible and at the same time raising money for cancer charities in the UK and abroad. I now have bookings in 11 countries. I hope you enjoy my New Digital Adventure talk and my aim is to inspire others to produce montaged and creative images. |
