The “off-camera flash workshop” held on January 19th was presented by IACC members Ron Trink, Linda Treleaven, Fred Rushworth, and Terri Ross. Each presenter provided topic background material to the group then presided over a “mini-studio” where participants had the opportunity to apply what they had learned. Topics included understanding flash basics, on-camera flash vs off-camera flash, dumb and smart radio triggers as well as an introduction to light modifiers and posing. Godox flash units and radio triggers were very kindly provided for the use of the participants by Karl Domning of illuminatils.com. On the evening of January 31st, Mufty Mathewson hosted a Novice Night Photography lesson from her home. Eight Workshop participants learned about Exposure Bias, and how to set a mood. Mufty also taught us how to create a star effect from lights using F22 stops. Participants drew inspiration from displays set up around her home, such as candles, flowers, flowers with bubbles, lamps and statues.
The third assignment was catching headlights using long exposure time. Although Groat Road Bridge was closed for construction, this did not stop us from testing night shots on the balcony. Overall, it was a wonderful evening in a fun and relaxed space, with individuals mingling and helping one another gain more camera knowledge. (article courtesy Kathleen Tyrrell) |

Workshop details
- Description of the equipment needed. The handout will provide information on equipment and supplies as well as local sources.
- Zbigniew will demonstrate step by step the process of cutting the matt, measuring and cutting the window and attaching the photograph. He may also show how to use a two-sided tape to attach the matted photo to a foam core support (at the end after the Pt. 3).
- Each participant would then execute the entire process (minus the foam core mounting) using the image which he/she would bring. Everyone should bring an image not larger than 8x10 in so that they will be able to prepare a matt for this print. There will be matting material available for prints up to the 8x10 size.
This workshop was held at the lovely home of Zbigniew Gortel. The format of the workshop began with a brief description of tools needed, where to purchase them and approximate cost. This was followed by Zbigniew demonstrating the mat cutting process and subsequently each of the participants cutting a mat for the photo they brought with them, under the watchful eye of Zbigniew. The matting material was supplied by Zbigniew.
Zbigniew was extremely informative and a generous and gracious instructor. He spent as much time as needed to make sure everyone understood the process and shared valuable tips. The evening was delightful and filled with knowledge and good company with everyone leaving with a lovely matted photograph. (article courtesy Sheilagh Morin) |

While there are many truly professional photographers and even more educators, Jason Symington successfully incorporates these two qualities in his practical approach to teaching.
On Sunday, March 31st, 14 IACC members met in Jason’s 124th Street studio (Imagen Media House) for a 2 hour+ session that included the outlining of his systematic approach to the topic (white board list) … followed by the step-by-step building of the lighting arrangement (including showing the effects of adding the various lighting elements). The session culminated with all attendees getting a turn at taking photos of the professional model, now lit in painterly portrait mode. Hair and makeup specialists were in attendance to prepare the model and keep things in place. During the Painterly Portrait Photography workshop, Jason was easy going and entertaining. He led our group from the basic elements of a creative portrait photography through the entire process of accomplishing a masterpiece image. While that workshop was not my first opportunity to learn from such a Master as Jason, I hope it would not be the last. (written by Ron Snider and Boris Sukalsky) "Here's Jason Symington 's finished image from the Painterly Portrait workshop. The preplanning, lighting setup, and photoshop editing (frequency separation, curve layers, retouching) led to this final low-key painterly portrait." (Janice)

"On Thursday May 2nd, Darren Greenwood hosted twenty IACC members at the Garage Shot magazine studio. Darren discussed the lighting and composition considerations related to automobile photography and demonstrated the techniques used in the capture of images of a Camaro in the studio. In addition, he reviewed the history of “Garage Shots” Magazine and provided a free copy for those in attendance. After a short break, Darren offered a slide presentation showcasing a number of images he has created for the magazine. In addition, Darren provided a live demo of his Photoshop post-processing workflow. Using an image of the Camaro, he demonstrated the steps starting with the selection of the car, then the realistic replacement of the background to produce a final image ready for sale or publication."

Workshop details
In this one day posing workshop, we will explore the building blocks of classic posing. By understanding the time-tested fundamentals of what makes a person look their best in a photograph, you will be able to adapt these techniques to a variety of photographic styles. These techniques can be effectively applied to almost any portrait style including classic head shots, glamour photos, engagement and wedding portraits, families, corporate and editorial portraits, and so much more…
We begin with the most important aspects of individual posing by exploring seated and standing poses, different angles, body language and communication skills. Throughout the day will build upon the individual pose to create couples and group poses that will both flatter the subjects and express the style of photography that the artist wished to convey.
This workshop will be very “hands on” combining instruction, demonstration and numerous exercises where the participants will pose and photograph several images. Participants should bring their camera equipment with them.

"Chris Stambaugh started off our workshop by describing portrait photography as having both technical and artistic aspects. He posed that both our right and left sides of the brain need to be engaged to manage the technical details and the emotional connections that create those special portraits. The basis of the day was fundamentals of what makes a person look their best in a photograph and how to achieve that."
