One of Edmonton’s fantastic winter festivals. The real fun starts when temperatures drop below zero.

Ice On Whyte hosts an International Ice Carving Competition, which is one of only three ice carving competitions in Canada. Be inspired and amazed as up to 10 teams of professional artists work to create jaw-dropping icy splendors. This year the competition will be held in a tent to control the temperature and protect the sculptures from the outside environment. Be amazed by blocks of ice that have been transformed into masterpieces of art.

Silver Skate Festival is a 10-day, family-oriented festival running February 8-18, 2019 in Edmonton's scenic river valley. Rooted in Dutch winter traditions, the festival combines sport (especially skating), arts and culture, and recreation. The Silver Skate Festival is the longest running winter festival in Edmonton. Over the years, it has grown in leaps and bounds, from a small skating event to a large-scale, winter extravaganza.

We will meet at the skate rental place just across from the lake. The highlight for the day will be the Kortebaan speed skating races at 2 PM and the fire sculpture burn at 7:45 pm. You are welcomed to arrive earlier and roam around at will.

Participants will enjoy access inside the Legislature building for a special visit before the general public arrives. We will have a designated guide that will tour us through the facilities.

Join us for this special visit the Legislative Assembly Visitor Centre has arranged for IACC members.  This time slot is outside of the hours that the Legislature building is open to the public, which means that we will not have to worry about other guests wandering through our shots. We will meet at 9 AM at the main rotunda inside the building and the tour will start at 9:15 AM sharp.  We will have a designated Heritage Interpreter (guide) who will provide context, answer questions, and lead us through the building.

Please note the following guidelines:
  • Anything you bring will need to go through the x-ray machine at security. If any participant is using film, they will need to have that separated and explain to security that it is film, and may be asked to show it to them.
  • As a special concession to the Club, tripods and monopods will be allowed.
  • The Visitor Centre's photo policy prohibits any commercial photography and photoshoots (even if none of the parties are being paid and it is just for portfolio building) inside the Legislature Building. Those rules will be in effect for our visit as well.
  • Our visit to the building will end at 11 AM.  We will then move to the Visitor Centre at noon to continue the outing at that location.

The Visitor Centre is in the Edmonton Federal Building, 107 street and 99 avenue, (just north of the Legislature bldg.) It includes interesting locations such as:
  • Pehonan Theatre
  • Agora Interpretive Centre
  • Borealis Gallery
  • Alberta Branded Gift Store
