Guest Speaker: David Buzzeo: Abstract Photography, a.k.a. My Six-Year-Old
Could Have Done That With An iPhone
Could Have Done That With An iPhone
|
Abstract photography sometimes called nonobjective, experimental, conceptual or concrete photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, process and materials.
While I find my inspiration in nature, the principles of abstract photography apply everywhere. Using landscape and nature as the subject, we will examine three aspects of abstract photography:
|
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's earliest compositions were at the age of five. Accordingly, if your six-year-old is an artistic genius, he/she could easily create an abstract work of art with an iPhone. The questions is: would you recognize it as a work of art? Hopefully this brief introduction will start you on your road of understanding.

Member Showcase: Alvin Baragar: Complexity
|
The presentation will meander from greatest visual complexity of the subject toward visual simplicity. In some cases, part of the task of the viewer will be to ask not why I selected to show this image but rather, "What events in the past caused this situation to occur?'' As my aim is to make visually interesting images rather than to record events with journalistic accuracy, I make liberal use of Photoshop to help focus the viewer's attention on aspects of the subject I find interesting, sometimes in a very detailed or restrictive way in the simpler images.

Characterized by or given to serious thinking or contemplation; thoughtful. Understanding the thought process behind a photograph is not necessarily about conceptualizing the shot, but understanding what was happening in that moment. Conveying that moment in your story to your "readers" is best accomplished when your reader knows you and can interpret the picture through that knowledge. When you know the author, you better understand the story and at times the story is at least as important as the technical nature of the photo.

Candace Makowichuk is a visual artist working in the medium of photography. She specializes in historical photographic processes and predominantly works with the following processes: Cyanotype, Bromoil, Gum Bichromate and Silver Gelatin. Working primarily with a historic bellows sheet film camera and 19th century photographic processes, her work references common locations by capturing elements of space and time and the intersections between urban sites, memory and the human impulse to connect. Her methodology and approach offer a moment to reminisce while at the same time celebrating the roots of photography in its purest form.
In 2017, Candace became the first Artist in Residence for the City of Edmonton Cemeteries. Specializing in historical photographic processes, she has been working on producing a body of work on her artistic interpretation of the seven municipal cemeteries and the one traditional burial ground. Shooting with both film and digital, she has captured a variety of the elements found within cemeteries - from the landscape to the decorative work of monuments and grave markers. Working both in a studio space in the Niche Building at Mount Pleasant Cemetery and her darkroom, this presentation will offer you a glimpse into not only the unique aspects of cemeteries, but also some of the meaning behind the various symbols, some of our more colourful people and their stories, and some of the changes in grave markers over the decades.

I’ve always felt a synergy with my photography and travel and I bring a camera with me everywhere I go. Each photo I take is an opportunity to capture and see the world from a different perspective, to appreciate new cultures, and to bring that appreciation back home with me.
I pride myself on being a versatile, self-taught photographer and am always striving to learn more, see more, and try more. Whether it’s around the world or around the block, my goal is to capture the world from a different perspective and in a new light.
